Day Four/Five – File System Testing

The others in this feed have been pretty busy blogging and writing and there’s some really nice stuff taking shape. It’s incredible how nice in fact. I’m not seeing junkware so far at all. Instead I’m seeing developers who are solving problems, some very interesting ones, and they seem to be approaching the solving at a very mature and, from the interfaces published to date, elegant manner.
Quite a variety of platforms, from Windows, Mac – but not just desktop. There’s some real “Web 2.0 0 ey” type things too.
For my part I’ve been busy on two internal aspects. First trying my file handling routines on slow machines. Clearly most users won’t have machines optimized the way I do. As I do Audio production a lot of junk in Windows is turned off. I have more RAM than most of my customers will have, more hard drive space, faster processors etc. So it’s important that the file handling routines are adequate in performance as they are key to the primary feature which is project based. multimedia software always has this issue to consider in some capacity or another. When you are using a single project file format this becomes very important.
So I’ve been testing and tweaking those. Testing on an old laptop or with 256 Meg RAM running Windows Millennium. Now, my installer will not allow folks to install on a machine using this OS (on purpose, I’ll be scripting it not to do so). But for testing it’s the crappiest setup I can access, so it’s a pretty good test. Naturally I’m also using virtual machines; though VM’s are not great tools for testing Audio applications as the VM soundcards are rarely even close to the worst “standard” OEM supplied soundcards on end user machines, causing problems were there are no problems.
OK. As I said, testing and tweaking. Finally I’m happy to say I’m completely satisfied with file handling and now am, as I write, integrating it into the GUI. Better late than never!
I also forced myself to go to bed at a “normal” time last night. This of course meant I could get up at a “normal” time. Of course it also means my activity is in a different time frame to that of the others in the 30 Day feed, and probably your’s too. It’s tomorrow here. <g>
Finally - I moved the development machine out of the room where I usually work (the “Audio studio” which doubles as many things at times) and into another room where I am closer to the heating. It’s winter in Melbourne and it’s become very chilly of late (chilly for us is around 1 deg C – a warm day by Alaskan standards I suppose!).
This has been really good for me. Less clutter. I feel like I can think. Of course I’m yet to wire in a lot of the Audio feeds, speakers etc, which takes quite a good deal of work. But in terms of getting “head space” it’s a positive move so far. They say a change is as good as a holiday!
When I get ten seconds I’ll add the names of the folks involved in the 30 Days as I promised I’d do days ago. Time is something that seems to fly past presently and I’ve been slack in this regard. My apologies to those involved.
Hoping to update with more info on what’s happening my end later on today.

Hi Scott, Just a short note to tell that I’m based north of you, in Sydney (currently enjoying several rainy days).
Phillip
Hi Phillip,
I’ve been watching Sydney’s weather. Looked pretty rough there last night. Nice to see some fellow Aussies visiting here too!
Good post, and excellent summary of what’s been going on. I’ve been contacted by a few new “late starters”, the list of developers joining the marathon (sprint?) is growing by the day and everyone is working on very usable and interesting products.
I appreciate that you’ve stepped up and out of your comfort zone (see your earlier blog post), Scott. I’ve done likewise with the posting of my ideas and designs and I hope this encourages others to do the same.
The weather here in the UK is hot for this time of year. 20+ degrees (celcius) forcasted for the whole week, with lows of 11-13 degrees. So it’s pretty warm and sunny here.
All the best, and see you on the blog feed!
Mike
